Frequently Asked Questions
Scope and Uniqueness
Which specific CSRD requirements does your system cover?
Emission Twin covers all ESRS standards, with XBRL tagging integrated from the start of the workflow to ensure accurate reporting. Emission Twin includes every step from the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA), through data collection, and finally to reporting. In addition to these three steps, which are essential for a comprehensive solution, Emission Twin has defined an additional step between DMA and data collection, called “Prepare.” This preparatory step facilitates data collection and provides users with a smoother and more efficient transition to detailed data gathering. Emission Twin also enables the delegation of reporting tasks across multiple users, making it easy to structure collaboration during the data collection process.
How does your solution differ from competitors?
The development of the CSRD module has been carried out in close collaboration with customers and CSRD experts to ensure that the system is intuitive while addressing the uncertainty that comes with such a comprehensive regulation. When the DMA is completed, the data input is automatically configured to provide confidence, minimize administration, and ensure compliance. The system also links directly to the legal text for those who prefer a more in-depth approach. It is easy to get an overview of the progress, and climate calculations and reduction plans created in Emission Control and Reduction Roadmap are transferred automatically.
In addition, the entire system is built on transparency to ensure auditability. For example, regarding E1-5 & E1-6, it is possible to review down to each individual emissions calculation. This makes audits much easier.
How are climate calculations and reduction plans integrated into your CSRD module?
All three modules are fully integrated, so Emission Control and Reduction Roadmap automatically deliver data into CSRD’s E1-5 and E1-6 for GHG data, and into E1-4 for the emissions reduction plan. However, it is also possible to manually enter data points from your climate accounts if Emission Twin has not been used for the climate calculations.
Which features are included at an overall level?
Emission Control supports the calculation and simulation of greenhouse gas emissions, but it is also possible to collect other types of data with the tool, such as water consumption or other quantitative and qualitative data. For CSRD support, see the CSRD module.
In Emission Control, data collection and structures can be configured to fit your specific business, thanks to our proprietary digital twin engine. The tool facilitates collaboration between data contributors and climate experts, making assumptions and calculations easy to understand.
Can the system help understand how to reduce emissions, or is it solely focused on compliance and reporting?
Emission Twin’s mission is to help companies achieve their climate goals, not just meet reporting requirements. With best-in-class technology, a user-friendly tool, and industry-leading support, we make climate action a part of the growth journey—not just a reporting cycle. Many have solved climate reporting, but reporting alone does not solve the climate challenge. That is what we do—together with our customers and partners.
How does the system help its customers achieve their goals?
Through the simulation functionality, you can explore which measures are most effective in reaching your set targets. Emission Control further supports this by simplifying data collection, calculations, and result analysis. This makes it easier and faster to evaluate outcomes and adjust the roadmap accordingly.
Adaptability & Scalability
To what extent can the solution be adapted to specific business needs, or is it a one-size-fits-all approach?
Emission Control is designed to be extremely flexible, allowing full configuration according to your specific needs. To ensure a quick start, Emission Control comes with a set of industry-specific digital twins that can be loaded as templates and then customized as needed.
When changes need to be made to the configuration, is this something the customer can do themselves?
As mentioned earlier, this is a key USP of Emission Control — the tool is built from the ground up to support a changing world. We assume that you, as a customer, will want to modify, add, and remove elements in the tool just as you do with your business in real life.
Can the system handle input data of varying quality? For example, when one supplier provides certain data and another provides completely different data?
Emission Control is designed to support everything from the simplest calculations (based on your expenditures, known as spend analysis) to the highest-quality and most accurate calculations (based on the functional unit of activities, such as kWh of energy, liters of fuel, or ton-kilometers of transport), and everything in between. It is also possible to base some calculations on spend data and others on activity data, and even to switch from spend analysis to activity-based analysis between two years. This is something you can do yourself at no extra cost. The flexibility is made possible by our digital twin technology.
Can the system perform calculations based on very low-quality data using estimates or default values?
Absolutely!
Does the system support customers in becoming self-sufficient in their work? Is it easy for them to perform necessary tasks in the tool themselves? Is this important to the system provider?
This is one of our core principles at Emission Twin — to give customers as much autonomy as possible.
Accuracy, reliability, and transparency
Can the system be adapted to the company’s specific needs and processes?
Since CSRD is a strict directive, we adhere to what ensures compliance. However, there is flexibility for custom methodology descriptions in the DMA, as well as other details that need to be company-specific.
How do you handle scalability if the business grows or changes?
Thanks to our technical infrastructure, we are equipped to handle companies of all sizes and are flexible enough to adapt year by year as your business evolves. This is one of the advantages of Emission Twin and the SaaS solution we have built.
Is it possible to update or add features over time?
As a SaaS company, all continuous improvements are made available to all customers, and we continuously update functionalities. The product modules we offer (CSRD, Emission Control, and Reduction Roadmap) can be purchased separately or in combination (however, RR requires EC to function).
Is the system suitable for both small and large organizations?
Absolutely. The system is equally easy to use for both small and large companies, and there is no upper limit regarding company size.
Are the calculations transparent, allowing users to see how results are derived from raw data to emissions?
The emission factors used and the calculations are displayed directly in Emission Control, including source references. All emission factors provided in Emission Control are quality-assured by experts.
How does the system handle input data of varying quality, for example from suppliers with uncertain data?
Emission Control is designed to support quality assurance according to IPCC guidelines, which means that input data can be compared to data from previous years and to representative KPIs per industry or business sector. At present, quality review is a manual tool-supported activity, but we are working to automate this over time.
According to the IPCC process, this is carried out in two steps: first, the input data can be compared at the activity level in terms of functional unit and emissions, and then it can be reviewed separately as a whole by a senior sustainability expert.
Is there support for third-party data verification?
In collaboration with auditing firms, we have simplified the verification process through fully transparent calculations and by enabling the upload of supporting documents, such as electricity certificates or other relevant evidence linked to specific data points.
Are emission factors included, or are they an add-on?
Quality-assured emission factors are included in the license. These are compiled from open sources such as Energy Agencies, Environmental Protection Agencies, IPCC, NTM, Swedish Energy Companies’ VMK, DEFRA, AIB, and others. If you have agreements with commercial emission factor databases (e.g., EcoInvent or Higgs MSI), we can also integrate those.
Data protection and security
How is data quality and accuracy ensured in the reporting?
Since CSRD reporting largely relies on user-generated input in free text rather than hard data points, a quality-assured workflow and the ease with which users can review input are important features. However, Emission Twin ensures that correct data points are carried through from step to step, that the XBRL tagging functions properly, and that, if you are a customer of Emission Control, data points from that module are also transferred correctly.
Is there traceability for the data used in the reporting?
In Emission Twin, you can track who has been assigned responsibility for each part of the reporting.
How often is the system updated to keep up with changes in legislation?
As a SaaS provider, Emission Twin continuously updates the platform and collaborates with leading sustainability experts from 2050 Consulting to ensure high-quality product decisions.
Can you guarantee transparency in your algorithms and analytical methods?
Thanks to our core foundation as a digital twin, all calculations are fully traceable. From Emission Control, you can even track an individual emissions calculation down to the lowest level in the platform.
How do you protect the system against cyberattacks and data breaches?
Emission Twin is a modern and secure product, with both authentication and the hosting environment built according to leading industry standards and using trusted third-party solutions. Authentication is managed through Auth0. The platform is hosted on AWS in Paris, and all customers have their own isolated tenants.
Are there features to restrict access based on roles or permissions?
There are different levels of edit/view permissions, and additional profiles, such as an audit profile, will be introduced during 2025
What measures does the system provider take to ensure the security of the collected and processed data?
All communication within our systems is encrypted using HTTPS, and access management is handled by a certified third party (auth0.com). All three modules run within a private network at AWS data centers (eu-west-3, Paris), and automated daily backups are performed.
